the fly fishing blog problem: what to do?

Fly Fish Yellowstone has a cool rumination/attaboy for the fly fishing blogs, tho he probably wasn't referring to thee AHW.

how to ruin your guide business: part 1

A Washington steelhead guide steals a pic from the Washington Flyfishing Board and uses it in a recent fishing report. Guy on the Washington Flyfishing Board sez: Hey, I grabbed up that gotdamn steelie in 2003, gotdammit!

Pictures? Oh, we got pictures.
Guides pic:
Dude's pic

A few thoughts spring immediately to mind:
1. Man, that was really fucking stupid.
2. That's a nice fish.
3. That guide must suck.
4. Man, that was really fucking stupid.

(thanks to Sir Bubbalot for the tip)

UPDATE: The fish pic at Dennis Dickson's web site has been taken down (so don't bother clicking, but take thee AHW's word for it -- the pics were identical) but thus far there is no "official" response. Tap. Tap. Tap...

digression: music -- thee best of 2006

Thee AHW kollektive is a loud and musical place. We do a lot of listening. In fact, we're fucking pros at listening to music. We can listen to more music in a shorter amount of time than any other fly fishing blog out there. That all being said, here's a short list of our favorites for 2006. As always, your comments are welcome and encouraged.
1. Akron/Family, Meek Warrior
Nice mix of stoned blissful tranquility and mixed up jazzy wha' tha fahkedness. This one features drumming of free jazzer Hamid Drake, which adds a nice rattle to the Family's hippie buzz.

2. Bonnie "Prince" Billy, And the Letting Go.
So the Bonny Prince goes to Iceland to record this thing with a bunch of Bjork's crew -- don't let that stop you from buying this. Some nice strum and sing by billy mixed with some soaring female vox. Bonus: some editions come with a free acoustic album, which kicks much ass.

3. Tom Waits, Bastards
Three albums worth of prime Waits. Fuck and yes.

the end of fly fishing BBs as we know them... please....

Thee AHW has covered pathetic as it relates to fly fishing bulletin boards many, many times. But holy shit, how much more pathetic can it get? Congrats to the Drake
and the Klan. You've hit a new high in low.

fly tying geeks: on your knees. bow to your master

Yes, we understand Graham Owen is good. Really, really good. So good, in fact, his flies entice other flies. Day-um. OK, we are impressed.

wherein we shamelessly pad our post count with easy to find youtube fish pron

Hey, it could be worse... a lot worse.

fly fishing magazines: the beatings continue

This time it's Northwest Fly Fishing coming under attack from the normally bland partisans of the Washington Fly Fishing board. Seems the mag published an article re. the Toutle River and that has ruffled some feathers -- but it's not simply the hotspotting of this one gem that's gotten a rise from the boys at WFF, they're mad at the writers, editors, publishers, the interweb, their fellow fishermen you name it... Amidst the venting of spleens, however, there are some worthy remarks.
Money Quote:

Rather than a prime target for a whole day though, I stop by the Toutle on the way to or from the Kalama for a change of pace. Don't expect this to be the last untapped Klondike of steelheading in Western Washington, because it's not. I predict that there will be a short flurry of interest, then the Toutle will revert to the obscurity it so richly deserves.
These outdoor writers have to write about SOMETHING every issue, so this time it's my playground, next time you can be whore-ified to see your favorite haunt profiled. I look forward to meeting ya'll on the S fork this winter. Once.

thee AHW is ready for our closeup

the AHW kollektive loved the ultra slutty fish porn that was Trout Bum Diaries, produced by something called the angling exploration group. Now it seems AEG is sponsoring a roving film fest type thing called Stonefly Fest. And hey, it looks pretty cool. The fest kicks of Jan. 12 in Ventura, CA. And yes, we will be willing to pimp this baby again for our usual spot on the guestlist/VIP. It's how we row.

a bit a primitive tech, but probably only useful for streamer fishing -- which is just as well, we reckon...

Yakima River: Good News

News reports that have emerged from the Yakima River these last few years have usually been bad for anglers. Recently, Yakima troutsmen have had to endure Jack Mitchell's carpet-bagging land grab at the Umptanum site as well as the multi-million dollar development and winery (!) now underway at the Red's Fly Shop site near Wymer Cut. Both of these developments have served to do one thing: shut out anglers from a public river. But what's this? Good news? On the Yak? For someone other than Steve Joyce and Jack Mitchell? Really? Really. Here's news about a new access point near Thorpe. Yes!
Money Quote:
Central, in exchange for nearly no lease payments, will undertake improvements including cleanup and installing footbridges, interpretive walking trails, a parking lot, signs, restrooms and other recreational amenities.

The park plan involves work with state parks to develop expanded parking and restroom facilities in coordination with the John Wayne trail, which is part of state park’s Iron Horse Park trail system.

wherin thee AHW does some housekeeping

Over there ---> on that sidebar thingy, we've added a few links. New to the link listing is Great Lakes Fly Addict as well as Gathering of the Klan. Anglers please take note: we in no way endorse these two horrible "fly fishing" "message boards", but they have been remarkably good for business of late. On a sad note, we say, "you're out the band, sunshine" to the hipwader site. sorry, canucks.

REMINDER: Fly Fishing editors = brilliant!

This gem comes from Mr. Snap, whose line of Rod Karp Karp Rods, we hears, is soon to make they long awaited appearance. Gracias, Snap...

The following is a letter written by Norman Maclean in 1981, to Charles Elliott of Alfred A. Knopf, which had rejected the first book, but was then courting Maclean for his second manuscript, 'Young Men and Fire'.

Dear Mr. Elliott:

I have discovered that I have been writing you under false pretenses, although stealing from myself more than from you. I have stolen from myself the opportunity of seeing the dream of every rejected author come true. The dream of every rejected author must be to see, like sugar plums dancing in his head, please-can't-we-see-your-next-manuscript letters standing in piles on his desk, all coming from publishing companies that rejected his previous manuscript, especially from the more pompous of the fatted cows grazing contentedly in the publishing field. I am sure that, under the influence of those dreams, some of the finest fuck-you prose in the English language has been composed but, alas, never published. And to think that the rare moment in history came to me when I could in actuality have written the prose masterpiece for all rejected authors - and I didn't even see that history had swung wide its doors to me.

You must have known that Alfred A. Knopf turned down my first collection of stories after playing games with it, or at least the game of cat's-paw, now rolling it over and saying they were going to publish it and then rolling it on its back when the president of the company announced it wouldn't sell. So I can't understand how you could ask if I'd submit my second manuscript to Alfred A. Knopf, unless you don't know my race of people. And I can't understand how it didn't register on me - 'Alfred A. Knopf' is clear enough on your stationery.

But, although I let the big moment elude me, it has given rise to little pleasures. For instance, whenever I receive a statement of the sales of 'A River Runs Through It' from the University of Chicago Press , I see that someone has written across the bottom of it, 'Hurrah for Alfred A. Knopf.' However, having let the great moment slip by unrecognized and unadorned, I can now only weakly say this: if the situation ever arose when Alfred A. Knopf was the only publishing house remaining in the world and I was the sole remaining author, that would mark the end of the world of books.

Very sincerely,

Norman Maclean

OWNED.

typing past the graveyard

They don't simply make fun of recently deceased children on Gatherink ov ze Klan -- there's actually a fairly amusing discussion ongoing about just what the hell is the matter with Fly Fishing mags these days. Sure American Angler editor Phil Monahan begin his defense by harumphing and stating: "Generally, I ignore Internet message-board arguments", but he dives right in and attempts to defend hiring (alleged) writers well under the age of 50. Yes, that (and a whole buncha other shit) riles/compells the Klansmen who appear in droves, clucking and preening, banty lil' roosters that they are. Yeah, it's pretty funny.

wherin thee AHW provides another totally badass link

Some brainy (?) science guys discover a whale carcass. They tow it out to "Seal Island," home to many, many hungry great white sharks. They eat, get stoned and get horny. It's a wonderful life...
