how to ruin your guide business: part 1

A Washington steelhead guide steals a pic from the Washington Flyfishing Board and uses it in a recent fishing report. Guy on the Washington Flyfishing Board sez: Hey, I grabbed up that gotdamn steelie in 2003, gotdammit!

Pictures? Oh, we got pictures.
Guides pic:
Dude's pic

A few thoughts spring immediately to mind:
1. Man, that was really fucking stupid.
2. That's a nice fish.
3. That guide must suck.
4. Man, that was really fucking stupid.

(thanks to Sir Bubbalot for the tip)

UPDATE: The fish pic at Dennis Dickson's web site has been taken down (so don't bother clicking, but take thee AHW's word for it -- the pics were identical) but thus far there is no "official" response. Tap. Tap. Tap...

Most amusing are the attempts of a few to justify stealing a photo and claiming it as your own.

Ahh, the Marketplace of Ideas in action...

Dennis Dickson's response:

My good friend Jonathan says there is a thread on your discussion board. Someone is claiming I stole the picture I used in my latest fishing report.

As it is a digital shot in my archives under winter steelhead, I don't think I can prove anything but:

Did he say how I came up with his picture? How do you know he didn't take it from me? Perhaps he just made up the whole thing?

As we have 1000's photo's taken from as many anglers over the 20 years, I wonder, did I fish this guy? I don't know. I do get anglers who send in shots, but we are usually pretty sensitive about only using first hand stuff, meaning we either shot the photo, ourselves, or it's a clients fish, and he sent it to us.

I had this steelhead photo labeled under my file in the Skagit winter shots. I am very sorry this photo caused such an uproar. It is hard for me to imagine a person would lie just to make a stink, so just for the sake of argument, I will have Sandy take the photo down and replace it with another.

If the deal was so offensive, I wonder why he didn't just contact me? Maybe he was looking to cause a stink. Sad.

Anyway, sorry to bother you. I know I don't bother your site, but perhaps your readers ought to at least hear it from the horse's mouth.

Dennis Dickson"

Rumor has it that dude is not satisfied with the Guide accusation/apology. Word is... dude has the data files from the original digital photo in possession, and is midst a current, unrelated copyright infringement action w/ one of the finer law firms in Seattle. Word is, there may be more words.

I can't figure out what the fuss was over. The picture wasn't that good to begin with -- I understand getting bent out of shape on principal, seriously, does this somehow make Dickson less of a guide? I don't think so.

I know some of y'all don't like guides because it commercializes what is a passion for all of us -- but what of the guy suing for photo rights? I put my photos out on the net and don't give a rats ass who uses them, because they I do them for my enjoyment. if I strictly enforced my copyrights, would I be equally guilty of "commercializing" my passion?
