“There is no maxim, in my opinion, which is more liable to be misapplied, and which, therefore, more needs elucidation, than the current one, that the interest of the majority is the political standard of right and wrong”

wherin we call attention to a verry worthy blog

Thee AHW kollecktive has decided to add the musings of the Mad Fishicist to our roll of honor. The Fishicist lives in Alaska, catches plenty of fish, and has a keen eye for the written word. His blog is a thoughtful collection of image, big fish and prose lifted from the likes of Yeats, Heaney and thee occasional mentions of AHW favorites Lewis and Clark. Well done, Fishicist -- another nail in the coffin of corporate FF media.

thee madison minute

What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wish to subvert the public liberty may have found an established clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not. [Pres. James Madison, A Memorial and Remonstrance, addressed to the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia, 1785

guided fishing in norway

outside magazine take you on a guided whale hunt. prolly not for the squeamish

light fuse. get away (redux)

Just in time for Halloween, she's back! Angie, the AHW kollective loves yuo!
Money Quote:
Once upon a time, when Miss Angie was rowing a gear client... A handsome giant Norwegian fella, named Jeremy... The “Troll of the Sauk” approached Miss Angie and client while she was a pluggin.

I looked over and thought I recognized Pat Hogan editor of Salmon Steelhead Journal in the front of “Wannabe Bad Santa’s” piece of shit FIBERGLASS drift boat, which was ghastly adorned with guide stickers. No one and I said no one, puts their guide stickers on the outside of their boat. Especially, 10 of them.

Because you get fucked with. Man are you people stupid?

So he rows up to me RIGHT before I get to the sweet spot, and asks...

“Are you that female guide?”

I responded sarcastly, because remember folks I don’t talk to people on the river anymore, because of this sort of shit. You get a little famous and the FREAKS come out of the wood work. Did I ever tell the story of some fat guy that came up to me at the boat launch and said that he thought the Skagit was so dangerous he was thinking about putting a seatbelt on his rowing seat.

wherin AHW commence a new mini-bonus feature!

With only three weeks to the election, we bring thee reader the first installment of Thee Madison Minute!

The aim of every political constitution is, or ought to be, first to obtain for rulers men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of the society; and in the next place, to take the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous whilst they continue to hold their public trust.
Federalist No. 57

thee greatest night in fly fishing

Here's a photo post documenting Burning Pram IV. Was a good night for the AHW kollective as our hound came in third in the dog race, AHW kollective spokesmodel thee (real purty) redhead wowed 'em with burning balls o' fire, and one of our interns set a new north american speed record in the "shotgun a warm can of PBR as fast as you can" competition. Huzzah!

we will post something regarding fishing -- something like: Yes, it's true that the corporate Einsteins at Fly Fishermen named their new off topic forum "The Lodge." Ha. Ha. Halarious! However, this post is not about fly fishing or how badly corporate fly fishing sucks. This shit is just wierd.

jerseys to avoid

a bit of advice from the sportsblog named -- get this -- rich kotite banged your mom.
here's just a taste:
# 81 - WR De’Cody Fagg, Florida State Seminoles ... He's an NFL prospect. I can't wait for Mel Kiper to talk about him on Draft Day; mostly because of his size. "I love Fagg here. Fagg fits in great here. Big Fagg."

# 85 – TE Ed Wang, Virginia Tech Hokies

# 87 – TE Kyle Sackrider, Michigan State Spartans ... This name is mind-blowing. What nationality is "SACKRIDER?"

# 90 – DT Quinn Pitcock, The Ohio State University

corporate whores kill rock creek

Bill Orchow is president and CEO of Revett Minerals. Bill likes silver and copper and American greenbacks. Bill likes this shit so much he's willing to fuck up Rock Creek, a population of endangered grizzlies, a population of endangered bull trout, put roads all over the place, dump chemicals, cut down trees and lord knows whatall else. Surprized? Nope. Not a bit. This is happening incrementally all over the country (steve joyce -- c'mon down!) and there is no one in the current administration who'd dare step in front of this type of progress. Having fifshed Rock Creek last week, well... I'm just stunned and saddened.
Here's the money quote from the missoulian
As planned, the 35-year project would build several miles of roads into the Cabinets, as well as railroad stations, pipelines, power lines, a tailings treatment plant and other infrastructure on more than 1,500 acres. At full capacity, it should yield an estimated 10,000 tons of copper and silver ore per day.

Earth - human = ?

A pretty fascinating piece in the New Scientist attempts to sketch a world in which homo sapiens simply vanishes. Imagine the fishing...
Money Quote:
Ocean sediment cores will show a brief period during which massive amounts of heavy metals such as mercury were deposited, a relic of our fleeting industrial society. The same sediment band will also show a concentration of radioactive isotopes left by reactor meltdowns after our disappearance. The atmosphere will bear traces of a few gases that don't occur in nature, especially perfluorocarbons such as CF4, which have a half-life of tens of thousands of years. Finally a brief, century-long pulse of radio waves will forever radiate out across the galaxy and beyond, proof - for anything that cares and is able to listen - that we once had something to say and a way to say it.

corporate fly fishing: yep, still sucks.

sucks so hard it blows. here's the money quote from Fly Fishermen:

Only threads and posts directly related to art, education, entertainment, food, health, recreation, science and travel will now be allowed.

besides the easy ridicule this story abides, there are some interesting issues being brought to the boil here. feel free to discuss in comments.

wherin thee ass hooked whitey returns to the sound of wailing, gnashing of teef and ripping of garments at Fly Fishermen

woah... was it something ridiculously idiotic Tim Murphy said? right out of the blue, the corporate knuckleheads that run the Fly Fishermen have decided to nuke their off topic board. (!) what, we wonder, is to be the fate of the "spey casting with Simon Gaewsworth" board? The northwest board (total posts in the last 30 days: 0)? And those couple of posters on the Eastern Canada board? They gotta be shittin'.

Ross Purnell, who runs the show over at FF posted that the OT board was going away (back away from the whisky, Colston), however, that post was later pulled. They are now in the midst of tearful goodbyes, bitter recriminations and the usual blatant dumbness.

Comments welcome.
