Yakima River: Good News

News reports that have emerged from the Yakima River these last few years have usually been bad for anglers. Recently, Yakima troutsmen have had to endure Jack Mitchell's carpet-bagging land grab at the Umptanum site as well as the multi-million dollar development and winery (!) now underway at the Red's Fly Shop site near Wymer Cut. Both of these developments have served to do one thing: shut out anglers from a public river. But what's this? Good news? On the Yak? For someone other than Steve Joyce and Jack Mitchell? Really? Really. Here's news about a new access point near Thorpe. Yes!
Money Quote:
Central, in exchange for nearly no lease payments, will undertake improvements including cleanup and installing footbridges, interpretive walking trails, a parking lot, signs, restrooms and other recreational amenities.

The park plan involves work with state parks to develop expanded parking and restroom facilities in coordination with the John Wayne trail, which is part of state park’s Iron Horse Park trail system.

I know that I'll never get thee or his acolytes to see it any other way, but I will say this: unlike the rest of you chuckleheads (and I say that with great love for thee AHW kollective), I have taken the time to get to know Joyce, and to a lesser degree, Mitchell.

Love 'em or hate 'em, see 'em as pimps or whatever, they are both fine individuals who care about the river, who know about fishing, and who are there for their friends when needed. Jack may be overenthusiastic at times, and I don't for a moment believe that he catches as many 20"+ fish as he thinks he does. But he's basically a quality guy. And while I don't like the development plan for Red's, it will arguably reduce impact on the river relative to how it is currently operated or how it was operated under Red and Marlene, by eliminating the buildings (restrooms, etc) down near the river, and getting rid of a sub-standard septic system that served that campground. Campground space WILL be lost, but public river access will be largely unchanged since it has been private land since even before Marlene's first husband bought it in the late 60's as a survivalist camp.

Who knows, maybe they'll even find the remaining ammo caches when they're digging up the lot?

We can't all be bloggers, living a life of purity and treading so lightly upon the earth that our footprints don't even touch the ground.

That said, the opening of another public access area is a great thing; hopefully the rumors that were floating around last year regarding Bighorn being acquired by BLM in trade for some land near Moses Lake will also turn out to be true, and that launch will get out of the state of semi-public limbo it currently seems to be in.

IMO, the biggest threat to the canyon that I'm aware of at the moment is the possibility of the dam at Wymer -- if that puppy is built, it may have little direct impact on access to the main stem Yakima but could have a great deal of impact on development pressure, construction traffic, and overall river use.

I, for one, cannot wait to pull my driftboat over and take a leak within full view of the "wine bar".

That has basically been my attitude towards the guys "roughing it" in the $100,000 RV's that clog half of Red's campground and most of the Slab.

We're all downscale from someone else.
